Super Bowl Betting in Colorado

Thanks to the passage of Prop DD, you can now legally bet on the Super Bowl in Colorado.

In case you’re not aware, the passage of Prop DD made sports betting legal throughout Colorado. Unlike other forms of betting that you’ll find in the few casinos in Colorado, sports betting has no limit, so you can bet as much or as little as you like on any sporting event.

Because Prop DD only passed in late 2019, it wasn’t actually possible to bet on the Super Bowl in 2020, but given that the date set for full legalization is May 1 of 2020, all interested sports bettors will likely be able to bet on the Super Bowl (and any other major sporting event) in 2021.

Do I have to be a resident of Colorado to bet on the Super Bowl?

That’s a great question, and the answer is simple: No, you do not need to be a resident of Colorado to bet on the Super Bowl!

All you need to do is be within state lines to make your bet and collect your winnings. Because there are several ways you can make a bet on a sporting event in Colorado, you actually have a variety of options for how you can approach this.

How large can my bets be?

As stated above, in the state of Colorado, you can in theory make as large of a bet as you want on any sporting contest.

That being said, it won’t be entirely clear until all the sports betting apps and casinos have worked out their own rules on sports betting how high the potential wagers will actually be.

Prop DD did not set a limit on how large sports bets can be, which is great for sports gamblers, but that doesn’t mean individual casinos and apps aren’t going to set restrictions of their own.

It is likely that you’ll see limits set in some of the brick-and-mortar casinos in the three cities where gambling is legal-yet-restricted in Colorado (Black Hawk, Cripple Creek and Central City), and it’s also likely that you’ll be able to bet as much as you want on at least some of the Colorado sportsbooks.

Can I make a bet with a credit card?

This isn’t actually clear from the language of Prop DD, so it will likely be up to individual casinos to make that determination for themselves.

However, it is the case in many other states where sports betting is legal that bets with credit cards are allowed. That being said, this might not be the best idea in the world. If you don’t have cash on hand to make a bet that you’re willing to lose, you might not want to make a bet on a credit card.

Still, for those who earn cash back and points on credit card purchases and who have money available to pay off the cards right away, making a bet on a credit card can be a good idea as they’ll actually save a little money that way.

How do I bet on the Super Bowl?

One option is to go to any of the casinos in Colorado that have a sportsbook and make your bets there.

There are a number of advantages to this option. The most obvious advantage is that you’re going to be able to sit in a bar or restaurant in your casino of choice and watch the entire game with like-minded fans who have also made bets.

Another big advantage to betting through a casino is that you don’t have to worry about food or drinks — while many people like to host Super Bowl parties, it can be a real pain to try to pay for all the food and drinks needed to serve all your friends and family.

On top of that, it’s often a real pain to have to deal with people who have gotten too drunk or who don’t care too much about the game and just want to chat or do something else.

If you decide to go to one of the casinos available to you in the three cities where gambling is legal in Colorado (Central City, Black Hawk and Cripple Creek), you can focus on the game and your bet and forget the rest of the world.

The other option is to make a bet on the many sports betting apps that have been rolled out since the passage of Prop DD. You can access these apps on your device of choice, including your smartphone, a tablet, or a desktop or laptop computer.

Betting on an app is a great option if you don’t want to spend the time or money making the trip to the three cities mentioned above, and it’s also a great option if you live in another state and just want to make a short trip across the border.

The other big advantage to betting on an app is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home (if you live in Colorado) or from a friend’s home in Colorado. You can relax with friends who may not be as interested in sports betting as you are, and you don’t have to worry about the cost of food or drinks at a casino, which can be high.

What kind of bets can I make?

There are many types of bets available when it comes to sports betting, but the types of bets you’ll actually be able to make in Colorado are going to be limited by the individual casino or sports betting app.

Here are some of the most popular types of bets that you’ll find for the Super Bowl:

  • In-play betting
  • Prop betting
  • Point spread
  • Totals
  • Money line

In-play betting on the Super Bowl

If you’re familiar with sports betting in other states, then you probably know that in-play betting is a great and exciting option for making a bet on the Super Bowl in a couple of situations.

One of those situations is where you just happened to miss the deadline for making your bets. There’s nothing worse than missing a deadline and not being able to make your bet, so this is a great option that many online betting apps will likely make available.

The other great benefit of in-play betting is that instead of just making a handful of bets before the big game and then sitting back and watching for a few hours, you can actually make all kinds of bets that evolve as the game itself evolves. This adds an extra layer of interest and suspense to the game, allowing you to make new bets as the odds change.

Prop betting

Prop betting is betting for those gambling aficionados who just can’t get enough bets in before the game (or even during the game with in-play betting).

With prop betting, you can bet on a wide variety of random possibilities during the game, some of which are possible to predict if you’ve paid close attention to both teams throughout the regular season and postseason (like the number of sacks that might occur, for example, or who will score first, or even who will be the MVP of the game), and some of which are completely random (like the outcome of the coin toss).

Many sports bettors actually don’t make any bets throughout the year and save their money for the Super Bowl, so it’s not uncommon for these types of gamblers to go all out on many different types of bets to try to win as much as possible during the Super Bowl.

Point spread

This is the most common bet that you’ll find in the sports betting world (at least in the world of team sports anyway), so you can rest assured that you’re going to find this type of bet available in any casino with a sportsbook or on any online betting app.

This is another very common betting option for the Super Bowl. Often you’ll be able to bet on the point total for the game or the point total for each team, but it really depends on the sportsbook that you’re betting through.

Money line

Money line bets are almost certainly going to be available to any bettors in Colorado who are betting on the Super Bowl. This is an extremely common type of bet and allows bettors to bet in pretty much the same way as they would with a spread bet.

How can I get started?

To get started, make sure you are 21 or older (the legal gambling age in Colorado) and that you are physically within the state lines of Colorado.

Then, all you have to do is either visit any of the in-person casinos in the three cities where gambling is legal in Colorado, or you can download your sports betting app of choice to your preferred smart device.

Finally, you’ll need to have your bank information and/or credit card information handy, and you’ll need to have your photo ID ready.
